The Dome2Dome Cycling Race moving to Silverstar Casino

The organizer of the Dome2Dome would like to apologise for the confusion caused by the change of venue and distances.

Due to unforeseen circumstances we were faced last week with the decision to either cancel the Dome2dome or change venue and the route to accommodate the change. We opted for the option of continuing the race and changing the venue.

We also had to find a new route in a very short time. Over the weekend we had a route as you know with a distance of 107km but after meeting with the local authorities and CGC and examining the safety issues at the Krugersdorp 4 way stop and also the large distance gap we made another few changes in the last 2 days to make this a more safe and suitable race for all participants.

The Dome2Dome Cycling Spectacular now boasts a new venue, Silverstar Casino with a new and safer route option of 90km and 40km.

The new 90km route takes in big climbs on the outskirts of the West Rand and presents some solid challenges which remains a tough test for any cyclist.

This makes the Dome2Dome the shortest Argus qualifier, but certainly not the easiest.

"I would go as far as saying it is once again Joburg's toughest race," says race organiser Liesel van Zyl. "One only has to compare the new profile of the Dome2Dome with that of any of the other races. By shortening the race to 90km once again I am now convinced it was the right move, because it makes the event accessible to more riders and makes it a safer race from start to finish."

We thank you for your understanding, patience and support.

Please see below for more information and our contact details.

For immediate release: Itec North Dome2Dome Cycling Spectacular

New sponsor, new (shorter) seeding route for Dome2Dome

The 2009 Itec North Dome2Dome Cycling Spectacular brings with it a new sponsor as well as great news for cyclists who are looking to improve their starting times in next year's Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour.

The Dome2Dome, which takes place on 13 September, now boasts 91km and 40km route options. The 91km route replaces the former 116km ride. The organisers, Perx Sports, applied to the Alpha Pharm Seeding Series for a reduced distance and, given the tough route, they received the go-ahead to do a 91km.

This makes the Dome2Dome the shortest Argus qualifier, but certainly not the easiest. The new route takes in 4 big climbs on the outskirts of the West Rand and it remains a tough test for any cyclist.

With the distance reduction, it does, however, bring it into line with most 100km events that act as seeding races for the Cycle Tour whereas the 116km route proved one hurdle too far too early in the season for most riders.

"We had a lot of riders who found themselves in no-mans land with the event. They felt that the 80km was too short and the 116km too long and difficult," said race organiser Leandro le Roux from Perx Sports.

"With the new route and the subsequent leniency from the Cycle Tour trust to still afford us qualifying status with the 91km event, we now cater for what the bulk of Gauteng cyclists are looking for at that time of the year. The Dome2Dome now affords Gauteng riders the opportunity of really getting their seeding effort going early."

The Dome2Dome welcomes as a passionate sponsor Itec North who take over from PowerAde. Besides taking over the title sponsorship of the Dome2Dome, Itec North have also come on board as presenting sponsor of the Silverstar Mountain-bike Classic, which takes place on 12 September, one day prior to the Dome2Dome road race.

Itec North is keen supporters of cycling in South Africa, and their involvement with the events is a natural extension of their passion for the sport.

"Itec North has been looking for the right cycling sponsorship opportunity for some time now. We were delighted when we secured the sponsorship rights to the Dome2Dome races," said Gavin Meyer, managing director: Itec North.

"This is a unique opportunity for Itec North to sponsor one of the top road races in the country, being both a 94.7 and Argus seeding event, as well as sponsoring a well regarded mountain bike event, all on the same weekend."

Riders who enter both will also receive a free ticket to the Getaway show which takes place on the same weekend as the Dome2Dome at Northgate's Coca-Cola Dome.

The Silverstar Mountain-bike Classic also features a stunning new route through the West Rand. Last year riders wanting to do the 40km had to do three loops on top of the Hillsnacks Mountain, but this year the 40km is one loop on its own and the route is one of the most picturesque that you'll find anywhere in South Africa.

Yes, in the concrete jungle there is still a place to ride your bike where you can truly feel part of nature and be spoiled with unsurpassed views.

After a 2.5km tar climb, the off-road stuff starts off tough and technical with lots of variety, strong challenges as well as long sections of rocky jeep track. Be warned that there are ample short, but nasty climbs on this section.

The event has the use of the entire protected area on top of the Hillsnacks Mountain and this year the route also takes the event onto the other side of the R28 via a culvert. This means there's enough terrain at the disposal of race organiser, Wynand de Villiers, for the 40km event to be a one lapper.

Once riders are done on the technical stuff at the top of Hillsnacks Mountain, the route goes onto the other side of the R28 through Chancliffe, past the biggest house on the entire West Rand (don't worry, you'll know very well when you see it) and becomes gradually easier to negotiate on the old historical ox wagon trails which the early settlers used.

Once you're past all the flower farms, an exhilarating decent down to Hendrik Potgieter Road awaits. It's absolutely awesome on jeep track with sections of single track thrown in - and it's very quick.

Once you're at the bottom the event snakes its way back midway up the mountain - all the way back to Pinehaven Country Estate, which is across the road from Silverstar Casino.

The last section of single track before you get to the estate is tough, but ride-able.

A fast tar decent awaits through the estate before you cross over Hendrik Potgieter Road and head down to Muldersdrift. A culvert takes riders underneath the Krugersdorp Highway and down to Muldersdrift.

After the famous Drift Inn, a short climb awaits and then it's fast riding all the way to Farm City and then the route ducks underneath Hendrik Potgieter again, en route to Featherbrooke Estate, before veering right and back to Silver Star.

With both the Dome2Dome Cycling Spectacular and the Silverstar Casino MTB Classic  ever evolving to try and serve the interests of the cycling community, the weekend of 12 and 13 September will certainly again be a highlight on the South African cycling calendar.

PowerAde Dome2Dome Cycling Spectacular

D2D presents SA’s first internationally sanctioned womens’ single day cycling event

After last year becoming the first commercially owned single day event in South Africa which is sanctioned by the world cycling body, the PowerAde Dome2Dome Cycling Spectacular has gone one step further this year to also become the first sanctioned event for women.

Leandro le Roux, race organiser, was ecstatic at the news that the event now forms part of the official women’s global calendar. “This positions the Dome2Dome as a truly world class event catering for men and women in the elite ranks and affording our riders the opportunity of gaining valuable UCI points,” he said.

UCI points are awarded to riders internationally according to their performances in races sanctioned by the sport’s governing body, Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). These points enable South Africa to qualify bigger teams for the World Championships and Olympic Games and also increase a rider’s market value.

“The Dome2Dome is all about catering for everyone. Besides putting on a user-friendly and well organized mass fun ride, the professionals also have to be catered for to the best or our ability. And to me that meant not just racing for another prize pot in another 100km race in South Africa.

“With UCI sanctioning there is a lot more at stake. I know that the MTN women’s team will be particularly excited now as they have plans to register as a continental team next year. To register as a continental squad they need to accumulate a minimum number of UCI points, which are now up for grabs at the Dome2Dome.

“It means they don’t have to try and gain entry into another international event and incur all the travel and accommodation costs associated with it,” said Le Roux.

Both the men’s and women’s road races take place on 14 September and the man in charge of the organizing the UCI leg of the Dome2Dome is a cycling official that certainly needs no introduction. Former chairman of the South African Cycling Federation, Gotty Hansen, is at the helm.

“We are fortunate that we could twist Gotty’s arm to come out of retirement and help us with the logistics on the event and ensuring that we meet all the UCI’s requirements,” said Le Roux.

Hansen boasts a career in cycling which spans almost 60 years now and he has no equal in the country when it comes to technical knowledge and the logistics of racing.

“It’s great to be helping them out,” said Hansen, whose range of Hansom bicycles revolutionized the industry in South Africa a few decades ago. “The event has the ability of becoming a wonderful showcase and I am glad to be doing my bit,” he said.

The 116km road race is also a qualifying event for the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour and it’s truly challenging.

The other route options are 60km and 40km. The 60km event has been added specifically with those riders in mind that feel they are fit enough for a flattish 100km event, but don’t fancy stretching heir limits on a hilly 116km route.

The festivities over the weekend will also include the Silver Star Dome2Dome Mountain-bike Challenge, which takes place at Silver Star Casino and Entertainment World on 13 September.

Dome2Dome stop-over for SuperSeries

The PowerAde Dome2Dome Cycling Spectacular will form part of the CSA SuperCycling Vets and Ladies SuperSeries this year, offering a combined starting category for vets and ladies irrespective of their age.

This will allow the best veteran men and women from around the country to compete against each other on equal footing at the Dome2Dome, South Africa’s fastest growing mass participation race.

The Dome2Dome will be the seventh event in the series, which kicked off earlier this year at the World’s View Challenge.

The series has two goals, firstly to enable the best veteran men to race against each other, irrespective of their age, and secondly to provide a competitive racing environment for elite ladies to race at a level they will encounter internationally.

The SuperSeries category includes many household names, such as Andrew Mclean, Gary and Mark Beneke, Jock Green, Jaco Ferreira, Dave Garrett, Craig Harvey and Marco van Biljoen, to name just a few.

All the top ladies in the country are also present, including Marissa van der Merwe, Lynette Burger, Cherise Taylor, Chrissie Viljoen, Anriette Schoeman, and Yolandi du Toit.

The SuperSeries combines well with the Dome2Dome, focusing on serious cyclists by providing a challenging course and UCI accreditation.

The series is based on Individual Points Rankings as well as on a Team Ranking. The top three riders’ points in a team are added together after each event to count towards the team classification.

There are four separate points’ competitions: Men’s Team and Men’s Individual, and Ladies Team and Ladies Individual.

The individual points are awarded as follows:

Single Day Road Races, Time Trials and the Final Overall Classification in Stage Races:
1st 30; 2nd 25; 3rd 21; 4th 17;5th 14;6th 12;7th 10; 8th 8;9th 7;10th 6;11th 5;12th 4;13th 3;14th 2; 15th 1.

Individual Stages in Stage Races:

On-line entry packs a punch for Dome2Dome

The big change to the race administration of the 2008 PowerAde Dome2Dome Cycling Spectacular, scheduled to take place in Johannesburg on 14 September later this year, is the switch to new on-line entry portal www.cyclingnews.co.za.

Race organiser Leandro le Roux explained the change very simply by saying the event needed to look at ways of reducing costs while still ensuring the quality of the event and the on-line entry facility.

“The system is the same one used by the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour and the Pick ‘n Pay 94.7 Cycle Challenge, so it’s extremely user friendly and effective. Its ability to process huge numbers in a short time is removed of all doubt.

“We have teamed up with Cyclingnews because we believe that, through the company’s various marketing avenues, the event will receive increased exposure. Their database of cyclists to which race information goes out on a weekly basis is very influential and this in particular added to our belief that we made the right choice.

“Because Cyclingnews organizes so many races annually, they decided earlier this year to do their entries in-house and we are fortunate to be able to piggy back on this. A huge benefit is that it’s considerably cheaper than our previous company and the result is that we’ve managed to keep the entry fee low amidst rising race organizational costs. Riders who enter for the 116km Argus qualifying event will still only pay R150 in entry fees,” he said.

Le Roux’s confidence in Cyclingnews is underlined by the fact that, besides their considerable publishing strength through Cyclingnews Magazine and www.cyclingnews.co.za, race organization is at the core of their business.

“Cyclingnews puts on some big road events such as the Capital Classic, OUTride and Emperors Palace Classic as well as mountain-bikes events such as the big Walkerville race which took place over the weekend.

“The insightful bit about all their races is that they continue to grow in numbers year upon year. Besides the fact that they take care of the on-line entry side very nicely, it’s also great to now have them as consulting company to our event,” he said.

The Dome2Dome, on its part, has also grown every year since its inception and continues to do so, gauging by the amount of entries that have already been taken on www.cyclingnews.co.za.

After four years of hard work and valuable support from the cycling community the result is a truly spectacular cycling event which showcases the best the sport has to offer.

This year sees the fourth staging of the race which attracted more than 6000 entries last year. And while Le Roux and his team previously worked very hard to get the numbers up, they have now reached a stage where the amount of entries isn’t their primary concern.

“We want to host a rider-friendly, safe event that will work itself up to become known as one of Johannesburg’s signature mass participation events.

“We have a world-class venue at the Coca-Cola Dome and a serious sponsor in PowerAde. Coupled with a testing, safe and scenic route, we believe all the building blocks are in place for the Dome to establish itself even further this year.”

With the Coca-Cola Dome as race headquarters, the Dome2Dome certainly has huge capacity for growth and while Le Roux and his organizational team aren’t worried about playing the numbers game anymore, the fact remains that the Dome2Dome is the fastest growing mass participation cycling event in the country. Hence they are preparing for 10 000 riders on 14 September.

While there are changes to the on-line entry system, the route, for the first time in the event’s short history, remains the exactly the same as last year’s.

The 116km road race is a truly challenging event, but also spectacularly scenic and rewarding. It’s a toughie and has become known as the first real wake-up call for riders who have lingered too long in winter hibernation.

The other route options are 60km and 40km. The 60km event has been added specifically with those riders in mind that feel they are fit enough for a flattish 100km event, but don’t fancy stretching their limits on a hilly 116km route.

The 60km is also undulating, but if you’re fit enough for a flat 100km, the 60km event will suit you fine. Remember, though, that only the 116km event is a qualifier for the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour.

The festivities over the weekend will also include the Silver Star Dome2Dome Mountain-bike Challenge, which takes place at Silver Star Casino and Entertainment World on 13 September, and the MTN Hype in the Street festivities that will take place inside the Dome.

Changing the face of SA Cycling - the fourth chapter awaits!

The PowerAde Dome2Dome Cycling Spectacular and race organizers 2one4 Events have always refused to accept the boundaries in South African cycling and after four years of hard work and valuable support from the cycling community the result is a truly spectacular cycling event which showcases the best the sport has to offer.

This year sees the fourth staging of an event that has already grown to more than 6000 entries and which has changed the face of South African cycling in so many ways. The most notable of its landmarks, of course, is being awarded international status by the International Cycling Union when the event last year formed part of the UCI Africa Tour.

The Dome2Dome became the only commercially owned single day event in South Africa with a UCI ranking and it attracted riders from all over Africa to vest itself as an event with an African footprint, which was very important to race organiser Leandro le Roux.

“Africa is a continent with such possibilities and as South Africans we have to take it upon ourselves to become part of the African community, to help build Africa and African cycling so that we can compete as a continent internationally. I’m very happy that we could position the race in this way.”

Another first for the Dome2Dome was simply being able to host an event at the Dome. Before the Dome2Dome came along it was unheard of to think that the entire Dome could act as venue for a cycling race.

The cost implications simply seemed too high, but Le Roux, courtesy of his experienced eventing background, brought PowerAde into the picture and suddenly it became a possibility - and very soon a reality.

As a result the Dome2Dome boasts with the biggest growth capacity of any race in South Africa – and, in fact, it has grown quicker than any other event in South Africa with almost 10 000 cyclists expected at this year’s edition of the event on 14 September.

This year, however, the big news is that, for the first time in the event’s history, the routes for the road races remain totally unchanged. This means riders can now start shaping their times and comparing each year.

The 116km road race, which is a qualifying event for the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour, is a truly challenging event – one can’t expect anything less of a route that is sanctioned by the sport’s worldwide governing body.

So when you’ve completed your arduous 116km journey you can rest assured in the knowledge that you’ve done it on a world class circuit.

The other route options are 80km and 40km. The 80km event has been added specifically with those riders in mind that feel they are fit enough for a flattish 100km event, but don’t fancy stretching heir limits on a hilly 116km route.

The 80km is also undulating, but if you’re fit enough for a flat 100km, the 80km event will suit you fine. Remember, though, that only the 116km event is a qualifier for the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour.

“It wasn’t an easy task for us to find a route out and back from the Dome, one which gave us total peace of mind as far as safety was concerned,” explained race organiser, Leandro le Roux.

“Last year, in the third edition of the event, I believe we finally found our way and although there were a few minor glitches at the split, I believe we’ve got the best route now. The small glitches are easy to sort out once you’ve gone through the hassle on a route once.

“We’re now confident that we’ve got the safest passage possible out and back from the Dome”.

The festivities over the weekend will also include the Silver Star Dome2Dome Mountain-bike Challenge, which takes place at Silver Star Casino and Entertainment World on 13 September.

Go on… Dare to do the Double

Following great public demand, the organisers of the PowerAde Lost City Cycling Festival and the PowerAde Dome2Dome Cycling Spectacular have decided to again present entrants the option of entering the Daring Double.

The PowerAde Daring Double is yet another unique aspect to the weekend-long sports fests which constitute the Dome2Dome and Lost City Classic with cyclists now having the option of entering for both events to qualify for a R51 reduction on their entry fee.

As an added incentive the first 500 Daring Double entrants will receive a free copy of the PowerAde Training Diary, authored by television cycling personality Andrew McLean.

The offer is only valid on the two long road distances in the events – the 116km road race in the Dome2Dome and the 103km road event at the Lost City. Considering the R99 retail price of the Training Diary, cyclists receive R150 back in value if they now enter for both events.

Together with enjoying the array of cycling activities on offer at the UCI ranked Dome2Dome on 14 September, cyclists can also strike a blow against cancer by riding at the Lost City, which is supporting the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) in the North West.

The Daring Double was offered for the first time last year and attracted almost 1000 entrants. It is set to grow substantially with the Dome2Dome in particular set to gain momentum in numbers.

The Dome2Dome is in its third year and already attracted more than 5000 entrants last year. It’s difficult to make predictions in cycling, but it won’t be a surprise if the event attracts in excess of 7000 cyclists this year.

Go on, dare to do the double. Simply click on www.cyclingnews.co.za and follow the instructions, while for any further information visit www.poweradedome2dome.co.za

The PowerAde Dome2Dome consists of the following:
